The Simon Building is home to the Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine; the Medical and Human Sciences Faculty Office, and Psychiatry. The building was named after Ernest Simon who was an industrialist and later a politician. He was a Manchester City Councillor, Lord Mayor of Manchester in 1921 and later an MP representing Withington. He was knighted in 1932 and became a Peer in 1947.
MCM have recently completed several refurbishments on campus removing existing Copper cladding and replacing with MCM Replica Copper cladding which utilises AlkorPlan coated steel products from their partner company Renolit.
MCM were recently specified by Manchester based Architects Fairhursts Design Group to manufacture and install a vertical Replica Copper cladding system for the proposed new fire escape on the Dover street elevation of the Simon Building (See Architects impression drawing)
MCM designed, manufactured, supplied and installed the component parts of their MCM Single Skin system in conjunction with designing some be-spoke features as requested by the Architects.
The tower is over eight storeys high and represented some difficult design challenges as the surrounding area is in the middle of University of Manchester Campus.
Located on Dover Street just off Oxford Road the new tower can be seen from miles away, over fifty metres high with an overall wall area in excess of 600 sq/metres.
This installation was subject to planning consent due to the building and surrounding area being within a conservation area, the project represents MCM fifth installation within the Manchester University Campus.
